A film capacitor is a very important device used in many power conversion circuit designs. In fact, this component is oftentimes referred to by design engineers as a “critical” component in their circuit.
Film capacitors are typically high-voltage, high-current, long life capacitors used in DC Link, input filtering, output filtering, snubber and arc suppression applications. These capacitors are found in traction systems, inverters, high-energy medical equipment, renewable energy power generation (solar, wind, etc.), power supplies, welding, and induction heating. Whereas aluminum electrolytic capacitors are nearly always polarized (positive terminal and negative terminal), film capacitors are decidedly non-polar and can therefore be used in all voltage reversal applications. Many film capacitors include a self-healing characteristic: the capacitor “heals” in microseconds after an internal short circuit caused by an overvoltage transient. Key characteristics that should be considered when choosing the appropriate film capacitor include overall AC/DC voltage rating (V), Maximum RMS voltage and Maximum RMS current specifications, ripple current (Amps), dV/dt (V/uS), and Case/Package Type.
Richardson RFPD does business with industry-leading manufacturers Cornell Dubilier, KEMET, GE, and Illinois Capacitor to provide one of the best selections of film capacitors in our industry today.
The parametric search filter allows the user to quickly find the parts they need by filtering the results in real-time.
Additionally, some attributes allow for the conversion of their base type to different types. For example, the attribute group for minimum frequency is shown in MHz. The values can be converted to be shown in KHz or GHz by selecting the conversion type from the ‘Select Conversion’ drop down list.
Any Attribute that does not interest the user can be hidden by clicking on the ‘X” in the upper-right corner of the attribute. To show any hidden attributes, simply click the ‘Unhide Attributes’ button in the bottom of the parametric search filter.
If you are experiencing performance issues, please use a newer browser such as Chrome or Firefox, or disable the ability of the filter to perform dynamic updates by deselecting the checkbox titled ‘Allow Filters to Dynamically Update Parametric Search Attributes’.
