One approach employed to expand wireless coverage while reducing the amount of installed equipment is that of distributed base station architecture. Two common methods of distributed base station include, Remote Radio Heads (RRH) and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS). In both cases the RF/Radio front end is distributed to locations to improve and expand wireless coverage, while the baseband processing is still performed in a centralized Macro Base Station (BST). The RRH or DAS is tethered to and controlled by the Macro BST.

This division provides great flexibility to the network, allowing the reuse of spectrum and extended coverage with less physical hardware than deploying additional Macro BSTs. Other benefits include, smaller footprint and lower operating costs, flexible multi-carrier capability, flexible implementation (software upgrading), and multi-mode operations.
