The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) introduced the first 802.11n standard in 2007, and in the intervening years, 802.11n devices in both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz modes have grown exponentially. The 802.11ac standard, expected to be finalized in late 2012, is exclusively a 5 GHz interface, with the benefit of significantly reduced interference, less crowding, wider channels, and improved spectral efficiency.
