The latest trend in circuit protection replaces electromechanical relays with semiconductor power devices, known as solid-state circuit breakers (SSCB). SSCBs are better than traditional mechanical breakers because they respond faster, are more reliable and are configurable. Unlike mechanical breakers, SSCBs use semiconductor devices to switch off the current in microseconds, minimizing damage and reducing fire risks. Silicon Carbide semiconductors offer superior material properties, allowing power devices to operate at higher voltages, temperatures and switching rates. In the case of SSCBs, this Tech Chat reviews the differences between SiC MOSFETs and SiC JFETs and which is preferred for this application. onsemi’s portfolio of SiC JFETs from Richardson RFPD are also discussed, including the positioning of SiC JETs vs. SiC Cascode JFETs v. SiC Combo JFETs in SSCB applications.
