The semiconductor industry designs and fabricates transistors, integrated circuits, power amplifiers, filters, switches, etc. There are three types of RF Semiconductor Manufacturers, and all require some level of RF test. Integrated device manufacturers (IDM) design & fabricate their own ICs. Fabless manufacturers design their ICs but outsource fabrication to foundries. Foundries fabricate ICs only with no in-house design. To reduce manufacturing costs and improve yield, semiconductor devices are tested after being fabricated to prevent defective devices ending up with the consumer. All semiconductor manufacturers test a wide range of requirements, from simple components (resistors, capacitors, inductors) to integrated circuits (ICs).
Semiconductor manufacturers often utilize automatic test equipment (ATE) systems that are designed to reduce the amount of test time needed to verify any electrical performance requirements.
